I missed out on all the 2010 Dubstep nights. Now I spend my time listening to construction sites.

This was submitted as my MA portfolio at the University of Birmingham. I wrote it over the academic year 2016/17.

The idea was to reconstruct field recordings. Would a reconstructed field recording still sound like the environment in which it was captured? Would it be an interesting starting point for a piece of music?

Re:Re:Construction, Re:Construction and Construction are based on recordings of a construction site from my bedroom window in Bristol.

Bramall Journeys 1-3 are recordings taken in the Bramall Music Building in the University of Birmingham, in whose studios this portfolio was composed.

Edinburgh is based on two recordings from Southbridge and Niddry Street, taken late at night during 2016's Fringe.

Sleeping Bag is based on a recording taken on a canal boat just before going to bed.

North Road is based on recordings of a conversation that took place in the house I lived in in Birmingham and an alleyway in Exeter where I visited a friend.

Some of these pieces are field recordings. Some of them are field recordings reconstructed as accurately as I could with sound material I had lying around or recorded specially - or at least they started out that way. Some retain just one or two things in common with the recording they were based on.

Wherever you are, pay attention to how it sounds.
